The Power of Sex

No one needs to be reminded that the mutual attraction of men and women for each other contains great power, both for good and for ill. Between husband and wife, it can: - Cause a man “to leave his father and mother and cling to his wife,” thus dissolving what was previously his closest human bond and creating a new, even more intimate one. - Create great energy and joy (Psalm 19:5; Isaiah 62:5). - Bring new life into the world. - Inspire great sacrifices, which point towards the sacrifice of Christ for His church (Ephesians 5:25). - Fill the world with poetry and song (Song of Solomon; Psalm 45). Outside of marriage, however, the destructive power of sexuality can lead to: - Jealousy (Proverbs 6:34; 27:4). - Violence (Genesis 19:5-8; Proverbs 6:33). - Disgrace (Proverbs 6:33). - Shame (Proverbs 5:12-14). - Deadly disease (Proverbs 5:11; Romans 1:27). - Ruin of relationships (2 Samuel 11:2-5; 2 Samuel 13:1-20). - Physical death (Proverbs 2:18; 5:4; 7:22-23)/ - Spiritual death (Proverbs 6:32; Matthew 5:29-30). We can understand why the Apostle Paul wrote, “Flee fornication!…Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:18, 20).
