We have seen that sex within marriage is sacred. Now let us look at some of the purposes for which God has bestowed this gift upon married men and women: To reflect the unity and plurality within God Himself, especially as the “two become one flesh” (Genesis 2:7). To mirror the relationship of Christ with His people, through the loving leadership and sacrificial service of the husband and the submissive subordination of the wife (Ephesians 5:22-33). To provide intense pleasure and mutual delight (Genesis 2:23; Song of Solomon). To glorify our Father in heaven through the procreation of godly children, who bring great joy to their parents as they as they grow up to walk in the truth (Genesis 1:28; Proverbs 15:20; Malachi 2:15; 3 John 4) To afford intimate personal knowledge of another human being created in the image of God (Genesis 4:1). To train His people in love and service in atmosphere of forgiveness and forbearance (Ephesians 4:1-3, 32; 5:1-2, 21-33). To provide a haven for other pilgrims and a home for the church (Romans 16:5; 1 Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:8). To train leaders for the church of Christ (1 Timothy 3:5, 12). To protect us against sexual temptation by giving a legitimate outlet for sexual desires (Proverbs 5:15-23; 1 Corinthians 7:2). Clearly, such a precious gift must be cherished and carefully guarded!
