Delight for the Desperate

“Unless Your law [torah; written revelation] had been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction” (Psalm 119:92).

All the psalms speak of Jesus, but none, perhaps, more comprehensively than this one, the longest in the Psalter. In every verse, the psalmist voices the inner mind and heart of Jesus, especially during his afflictions, which began when the Spirit led him into the wilderness to be tempted (Luke 4:1).

Here we learn the “secret” of our Lord’s unique and stunning calm, composure and confidence when his enemies assailed him with every kind of malicious attack: He constantly “delighted” in God’s written Word.

How about us? Will we follow him as he feeds daily on the sweetness of Scripture (see verse 103), fortifying ourselves for the afflictions that attend the normal Christian life?
