Rejoice!

“The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice . . . Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous [by faith]” (Psalm 97:1, 12).

Dear Praying Friends:

For several months, I have used the Anglican Daily Office Morning Prayer liturgy as part of my quiet time (www.dailyoffice2019.com). I also try to read all the psalms in the lectionary for that day. Today, they are Psalms 95-98, in which the command to rejoice appears no less than eight times (95:1-2; 96:11-12; 97:1,12;  98:4, 6).

The same theme resounded throughout the glorious Christmas service of Scripture, narrative, music, and sermon in our church yesterday, during which the choirs and congregation sang hymns and anthems that reminded us that the birth of Jesus is good news of joy to all the world.

In the bleakness of early winter and the throngs of troubles that threaten our joy, God’s Word tells us that he reigns and rules with righteousness and justice, high above all so-called “gods” and forces of evil. He preserves the lives of his saints and gives them light and gladness. He has done marvelous things by his mighty power, saving his people with lovingkindness and faithfulness. And he will come again in glory to judge the world.

The Incarnation of his Son Jesus shines this light of truth in the darkness, which can never overcome it. So, we have ample reason for joy!

Thank you for praying last week. The Lord continued to empower Dori and the choir to give godly pleasure and deep peace to our hearts. Dori derives immense joy from the privilege of participating in this ministry.

The Lord also enabled me to finish “mining” A.J. Broomhall’s “life and times” of Hudson Taylor for the story of Bishop Burdon, Taylor’s close friend and brother-in-law. Now I will move on to other sources for the story about Burdon. As usual, I also enjoyed rich conversations.

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47).

Yours in his joy,
Wright
