A New Song
September 15, 2025
“He also brought me out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth – Praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the LORD” (Psalm 40:2-3).
Dear Praying Friends:
We don’t know from what “horrible pit” God had recently delivered David in answer to his prayers, but he must have been there a long time, for he says, “I waited patiently for the LORD” (1). God’s timing is not our timing, as David discovered repeatedly.
Even more than most of the psalms, this one clearly points forward to Christ, his obedience, suffering and his resurrection, as we know from the quotation of it in Hebrews 10:5-9. Jesus knows firsthand that obeying God’s will can lead us into danger and deep distress.
As I read Psalm 40 today, my soul resonated with its opening words in a new way. In recent years, I have realized that I have been stuck in the mire of anxiety and melancholy for more than eight decades. Then, on Easter Sunday, the Lord delivered me in a wonderful way. You can read about it on my blog at wrightdoyle.com/how-god-has-healed-me-from-depression-and-anxiety/.
The photo below shows how this dramatic rescue has affected my brain, as seen on the screen during the first session of microcurrent neurofeedback therapy after I returned from Taiwan. The right and left hemispheres, which had been wildly out of sync before, are now tracking closely with each other.
“Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; let such as love Your salvation say continually, ‘The LORD be magnified!’” (Psalm 40:16).
Yours in his unfailing love and power,
Wright
