Thirsty for God
September 22, 2025
“O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1).
Dear Praying Friends:
David is thirsty. Once again on the run from his deadly enemy King Saul, he finds himself in an arid wilderness with no water around.
Worse than that, however, is his thirst and hunger for God. He realizes that his parched lips really reflect his thirsty soul. Why? Because God’s lovingkindness [chesed] is “better” than life itself. He knows that what he really desires, even more than water, food, and safety, is the presence of God. He wants to see and “taste” God’s power and glory, as he used to when he went into the tabernacle.
We, too, long for love. More than anything else, we hunger and thirst for a love that will satisfy our deepest desires. We desperately yearn for a love that guides and provides. A love that protects us, propels us with fresh energy into difficult days, and sustains us in the daily grind.
With all our hearts, though perhaps unconsciously, we seek a love that forgives our sins, affirms our basic worth as God’s image bearers, and accepts us as we are while urging us on to become what we were meant to be. A love that does not depend on our performance. Love that grounds us on a rock during the storm.
David knows where to find such a love: In God alone. We know this love in Jesus, the Son of God, who said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37). Those who continue to trust in him will receive a never-ending stream of God’s love through the Holy Spirit, who will overflow into a love for others also.
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price” (Isaiah 55:1).
Yours in the love of our soul-satisfying God,
Wright
