“Who is so great a God as our God? You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples. You have with Your arm redeemed Your people” (Psalm 77:13b-14a).
Dear Praying Friends:
Asaph the psalmist struggles with confusion and doubt. In deep distress, he keeps asking God for help, but it doesn’t come. He lies awake at night, praying, but his “soul [has] refused to be comforted.” He remembers God, but he is still troubled; he complains and his spirit is overwhelmed. He is so troubled that he can’t speak (2-4).
He asks, “Will the LORD cast off forever? And will He be favorable no more? Has His mercy ceased forever? Has His promise failed forevermore? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies?” (7-9).
Then, pulling himself up short, he resolves, to “remember the works of the LORD; surely I will remember Your wonders of old” (10-11). Turning his mind’s eye back to the greatest instance of God’s mercy and might, he recalls the stupendous intervention of God to save his people from bondage in Egypt. Truly, God is a God of wonders!
When we feel like Asaph, we too can remember God’s mighty redemption wrought by the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. Some can also recall how the Lord brought us from spiritual death to life by causing us to be born again by the Holy Spirit. And he’s done other “wonders” for us since then. Let’s focus on those!
Yours in the love of our God of wonders,
Wright
