Hear Me

Hear Me

August 4, 2025

“Hear me, for I am poor and needy” (Psalm 86:1).

Dear Praying Friends:

God allowed David to fall into grave trouble for many reasons, one of which, surely, was to move him to pen cries for help that resonate with our deepest longings. By pouring out his heart to the Lord, David showed us how to respond to trouble, teaching us much about our Lord in the process.

Psalm 86 stands out to me because David grounds his confidence that God will hear him first upon the bare fact that he needs help: “Save Your servant who trusts in you! Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I cry to You all day long. Rejoice the soul of Your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul” (1-4).

Second, David believes in God’s covenant love toward him as one of God’s people. He claims God’s attention and care because he belongs to God and he is the Lord’s servant: “You are my God; save Your servant” (2, 4, 16).

Third, he bases his faith on the solid ground of God’s character: “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy [loving-kindness] to all those who call upon You . . . You are great and do wondrous things . . . Great is Your mercy [loving-kindness] toward me” (5, 10, 13).

We, too, can express our deepest needs to the one who demonstrated his love for us fully and finally in the saving work of his Son, Jesus (Romans 8:32).

Thank you for praying last week. We were able to communicate with several ministry partners and Chinese friends and to make a few arrangements for our trip to Virginia and mine to North Carolina.

“You are a God full of compassion, and gracious, long-suffering and abundant in mercy [lovingkindness] and truth” (15).

Yours in the vast love of our listening God,
Wright
